2023 Workplace Index – Q2

The world of hybrid work is changing. Across our global reach of more than 16,000 customers and 16.3M users, we’ve seen strong patterns emerge as everyone shapes what their workplace looks like and how it will behave in 2023 and beyond.

To help organizations manage their workspaces, we published our first Workplace Index report earlier this year. We examined four conflicting demands affecting workplaces worldwide, and how, with better data, businesses can balance these demands by gaining a deeper understanding of their worlds.

In our latest report we identify how organizations can manage individuals’ desire to work the way they want and still enable the human connections businesses and employees need. To do this we have supplemented our extensive proprietary data with independent quantitative research to examine employee motivations and behaviors.

KEY FINDINGS

Get the complete picture
of your workplace

  • There was a consistent yearly rise in workspace bookings and visitors across all regions and industry sectors, alongside a 20% increase in maintenance work orders from Q2 2022 to Q2 2023.
  • Employees ranked “socializing with friends and colleagues” and “collaborating with colleagues” as the biggest benefits to being in the office.
  • The top 3 technologies employees want from employers are software to connect virtually and physically, collaboration software, and meeting room booking software.
  • Younger generations tend to collaborate more frequently than older generations, but the collaboration is more spontaneous, and rarely planned.
  • While the ideal ratio of preventive to corrective maintenance is roughly 4:1, Eptura Q2 data shows a ratio of 4:7.

FREEDOM AND CONNECTION DEEP DIVE

Do you know what's really
happening in your workplace?

For the second edition of our Workplace Index, we uncover the truth behind employee behaviors versus employer expectations, and identify how business leaders can find common ground to satisfy the needs of all parties.

The value of social connections

Whether their top priority was “collaborating with colleagues” or “socializing with friends/colleagues,” survey respondents made clear that the value of the office is driven by connection.

Facilitating spontaneity

While planned collaboration is easily achieved no matter where teams are located, getting colleagues to work together on the fly requires collaboration software that facilitates connection in the workplace.

Conflicting priorities

Senior managers, middle managers, and non-managers all have differing priorities and concerns — but factors like age and living situation can impact employee sentiment on working in an office, too.

More pull, less push

Our research shows that more flexible work hours would be the biggest motivator to get people back into the office — and that mandates aren’t producing the results leaders want.

Encourage more people back into the workplace

As an expert in customer experience, Eptura’s own Phil Davitt sees firsthand which strategies actually work for companies trying to get people to spend more time together in the office. And according to the latest data in our Workplace Index - Q2, his takeaways are spot on — it’s up to businesses to build value in their physical workplaces for employees.
